Why nerves matter

Most fails come from stress + weak preparation. Calm mind = better decisions, fewer errors.

10+ quick wins for calm & confidence

1) Finish the basics Do your 120 hours properly and tick off all learning objectives in the log book.

2) Know the test rules Read the official Guide to the Driving Test and how the score sheet works. Blind-spot checks are the #1 fail.

3) Practice test-day moves Kerb-side stop, 3-point turn, reverse parallel park. Do them slow, smooth, the same way every time.

4) Local tracks = local practice Drive around your own test centre (common routes, tricky spots, school zones, roundabouts).

5) Book a warm-up lesson A 45–60 min lesson right before your test catches last-minute mistakes.

6) Breathe to reset Two deep breaths before you move off. If nerves rise mid-test, exhale longer than you inhale.

7) Positive self-talk Replace “I’ll fail” with “I know the rules. I can do this.” Focus on the next 5–10 seconds of driving only.

8) Eyes lead the car Scan far ahead, check mirrors regularly, and head-check before moving off, changing lanes, merging, or turning.

9) Be healthy on the day Sleep well, eat a balanced meal, arrive 15–20 min early. Rushing = mistakes.

10) Drive the speed, not the limit Aim for safe & legal, not “exactly the number”. Watch signs, conditions, and keep space.

11) Own your decisions If you’re unsure, slow down safely and reassess. The test is about safe decisions, not tricks.

12) Learn after every drive Note one thing you did well and one to improve. Tiny improvements = big calm.
